Ukrainian forces reportedly recapture Snake Island in strategic victory | Ukraine

Ukrainian troops say they have expelled Russian troops from Snake Island, a strategic landmass in the Black Sea off the south coast near the city of Odessa.

Ukraine’s reported recapture of the island weakens any plans Russia might have for a future land attack on that part of the coastline.

The Russian Defense Ministry stated that it had completed its assigned duties and withdrew tactically to allow grain exports from Ukraine’s Black Sea ports.

“In order to organize humanitarian grain corridors as part of the implementation of joint agreements reached with the participation of the UN, the Russian Federation has decided to leave its positions on Zmiinyi Island,” the defense ministry said.

Ukraine said it had forced Russian troops to flee overnight on two speedboats. The statement from Ukraine’s Southern Command said explosions could still be heard and the island was covered in smoke, which seemed to indicate that fighting was continuing.

Snake Island became famous when Russia first captured it in February. A Ukrainian soldier stationed on the island told an attacking Russian warship to “fuck yourself”, which has become one of the most popular Ukrainian resistance slogans since the invasion.
