Several dead in shooting at Danish shopping center

Several people have been killed in a shooting at a shopping center in Copenhagen.

Copenhagen police, who have arrested a 22-year-old Danish man, said they could not rule out the possibility that the attack was an “act of terrorism”.

“We know there are multiple deaths… [and] several injured,” Police Inspector Søren Thomassen, head of the Copenhagen Police Unit, told a news conference.

Officers had been sent to Field’s mall in the city after reports of a shooting, telling people downtown to sit and wait for help, they said.

The capital’s main hospital, Rigshospitalet, had received a “small group of patients” for treatment, a spokesman said.

It had engaged additional staff, including surgeons and nurses, the spokesman added.

Local media published images of heavily armed police officers at the site of the attack, as well as people running out of the mall.

Images published by tabloid Ekstra Bladet show a person being carried by rescuers on a stretcher into an ambulance.

Laurits Hermansen told Danish broadcaster DR that he and his family were in a clothing store in the shopping center when he heard “three to four bangs. Really loud bangs”.

“It sounded like the shots were fired right next to the store,” he said.

A concert by former One Direction band member Harry Styles was set to take place at the nearby Royal Arena at 8pm local time. It was not clear whether the concert would take place.

On Snapchat, Styles wrote: “My team and I are praying for everyone involved in the shooting at the Copenhagen shopping mall. I am shocked. Love H.”

Shortly after the shooting, the royal palace said a reception with Crown Prince Frederik associated with the Tour de France cycling race had been cancelled.

The first three stages of the race were held in Denmark this year, the palace said in a statement.

The reception would take place on the royal yacht docked in Soenderborg, the city where the third stage ended.
