John Legend Admits He Was ‘Not a Great Partner’ for Chrissy Teigen in the Early Years of Their Relationship

John Legend reflects on the early years of his romance with his now-wife, Chrissy Teigen.

During a recent interview on the On purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, John Legend, 43, admitted he was not a committed partner at the beginning of his relationship with Chrissy Teigen, 36.

He explained,

“I think I was more selfish then. I wasn’t a great partner at the beginning of our relationship. Even though I was very fond of her and very excited to be with her. I was still selfish. I was in my mid-twenties, not ready to be the committed partner I am today.”

However, as time went on Legend said he realized he had to change his ways and fight for the relationship with the person he loves.

“When you stop being so selfish when you think not only about the joy you get out of a situation and the joy you get out of it, but also about your responsibility and your dedication in that situation. You just grow and you mature. Part of it is that it’s only a matter of time. You need time to become the person you want to be.”

He went on,

“When we first met, we were very attracted to each other, our chemistry was great, but that level of attraction is more like falling in love at the beginning of a relationship. And love if it can stand the test of time must deeper and more real than that.”

The “All of Me” singer went on to admit that difficult times made the couple stronger and brought growth to the relationship.

“We have been through enough together, it has really strengthened and made us stronger. Those tests helped us grow together and realize things about each other that we didn’t know. And going through all that… to be able to write and sing a song called “I Don’t Love You Like I Used To.” It’s different now, but it’s better.”

Through their many ups and downs, John Legend shared what he was able to learn a lot about Chrissy Teigen’s personality, which made him appreciate her even more over the years.

“How she reacts to stress, how she reacts to life, how to find a joke, even in the craziest … even in sadness, she is able to find humor. I feel like you see so many things about your partner growing up together and when you go through adversity together and what I’ve seen of her has made me love her more and appreciate her more. I think she’s cooler now than I ever imagined. I’ve just really seen her in all sorts of situations. I just appreciate her more and am more in awe of her than I’ve ever been.”

The power couple met in 2006 on a music video set and later tied the knot in 2013.

Chrissy and John share two children together: Luna Simone, 6, and Miles Theodore, 4. They are expecting a new addition to the family after suffering a pregnancy loss nearly two years ago.
