Early Sunday morning, the Edmonton Oilers announced through their social media channels that the team (F) Mattias Janmark has signed a $1.25 million one-year contract.

After spending the first four years of his NHL career in Dallas, the 29-year-old resident of Danderyd, Sweden, played a year in Chicago before spending the last two years in Vegas. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the third round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft (79th overall), Janmark has built a career in the bottom six and should be able to assist in the middle or on the wing. His best season came with the Stars in 2017-18 when he scored 19 goals and added 15 assists, so I hope he will be able to score some more when the big boys aren’t around. However, it is more likely that Janmark will make his bones with the Oilers on the penalty kill where he is reported to have had some success.
So what do we get in Janmark? According to Aidan Champion at Sports Illustrated, it could go either way based on his last season:
When the Vegas Golden Knights took over attacker Mattias Janmark from the Chicago Blackhawks in April 2021, he was expected to grow into a more complete player as he was only in his fifth season at the time.
That hope has been far from the case since his arrival. The trade for Janmark appeared to pay off as the then 28-year-old forward scored three goals in Vegas’ series win over the Minnesota Wild in the first round of the 2020-21 playoffs.
Since then, Janmark’s offensive presence isn’t much to write home about.
The forward scored just nine goals and 16 assists for a total of 25 points in 67 games played in the 2021 season.
Although Janmark missed games due to injury and COVID-19 protocols, his performance on the ice was still disappointing. He didn’t score a single point in early to mid-November. Jankmark made up for it when he scored at least one point in six of the next eight games, but only got one point in the next eight games.
In 67 games played with the Golden Knights in 2021-22, Janmark scored nine goals and 16 assists, along with 21 PIMs and a +3 rating. With 420 games to his name between the Dallas Stars, Chicago Blackhawks and Golden Knights, Janmark has 66 goals and 92 assists for 158 points in seven NHL seasons. He scored eight goals and 16 assists in 61 playoff games in his career.
