You could hear the crowd moaning loudly after a DJ played an Ed Sheeran song for a prom queen in a wheelchair.
A TikTok of a balcony queen and queen’s winning dance is going viral for all the wrong reasons.
The clip — shot at a seniors ball in Texas in 2017 and uploaded by user Celeste Orozco on Thursday — already has 16 million views — capturing the moment the DJ played Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” for selected royalty.
“When your legs don’t work like they used to,” Sheeran sings in the song’s opening line.
But the partygoers cringed audibly at the lyrics of the 2014 smash hit when Balconie Sarah Mendenhall sat in the center of the dance floor – in a wheelchair.
“This would haunt me for the rest of my life if I were the DJ,” Orozco wrote atop the scene, which has more than 2.8 million likes and 44,900 comments.
“The DJ knew exactly what he was doing,” one user wrote, while another put it: “That’s f-ked up bro.”
“He said ‘wait a minute, I’ve got the perfect song,'” another joked.
“The DJ got $20 to play that by the girl who finished in second place,” another guessed.
“There is no way,” said one.
“Personally would have run away,” said another.
“I am a wedding DJ. ouch,” admitted one user. “We can’t know every lyric of every song, but damn.”
“I forgot that’s how the song started,” said one commentator, who another said was the DJ in the video.
“I would have been so embarrassed and just cried and left. I hope this didn’t ruin her evening,” another user sympathized.
Fortunately, that was not the case.
“Hello everyone, so this is me lol,” Mendenhall wrote. “I thought it was very funny and ironic. I only knew what was going on much later, because I (tried) to dance.”
“Had a great night before prom and had a good laugh about it the next day,” Orozco replied, telling users that Mendenhall was “her best friend” and adding, “Please stop the hate.”
