Chiropractors adapt an atypical population in the industry: infants. The practice has brought in some moms on TikTok and made pediatricians concerned.
Several chiropractors post videos on TikTok about how babies benefit from adjustments, some as young as 6 days old. Some videos have millions of views and spark a discussion among viewers.
“I’d be scared because babies are so vulnerable,” said one viewer of Pro Health Chiropractic’s viral TikTok video of a baby being modified.
“Our pediatrician about fell off his chair when I was talking about newborns and babies going to the chiro (practitioner),” commented another mother.
Pediatric chiropractors on TikTok vouch for the practice, saying adjustments can help common problems in newborns, including constipation, colic, gastrointestinal issues and sleep problems.
Chiropractor Lindsay Pelley explained to BuzzFeed News that baby fittings are drastically different from adult fittings, which may add to the anxiety surrounding chiropractic services for children.
“If you go to a specialist pediatric chiropractor, there are minimal risks. It’s a very gentle, conservative way to improve the quality of life for the baby and most likely mother with minimal intervention,” Pelley told BuzzFeed News.
However, there is little science to support the effects of chiropractic services on infants, pediatricians told the Washington Post, and some parents may be seeking a natural-behavior solution that a child eventually grows out of.
“Colic is a developmental stage in a normal child,” Michael Milobsky told the Washington Post. “But it’s been sold as something that can be treated or solved, rather than understanding that this is just a development period with a broad spectrum of presentations.”
dr. Sean Tabaie said he and his colleagues are alarmed by some of the videos circulating around TikTok, the Washington Post reported.
“Ultimately, you’re not going to get an improvement in a newborn from a manipulation,” said Tabaie, an orthopedic surgeon at Children’s National Hospital in DC. “The only thing that could potentially cause you is damage.”
“Babies never need an adjustment,” Tommy Martin, a Verified Doctor on TikTok with millions of followers, says on Pro Health Chiropractic’s page.
The debate over whether babies should see a chiropractor or not dates back years, including in 2016 when a video of an Australian chiropractor cracking a baby’s back went viral, ABC Australia reported.
“There aren’t many things that make an orthopedic surgeon emotional, but seeing a premature baby with a broken back literally brings tears to your eyes,” John Cunningham, a surgeon who lives in Melbourne, told In 2016 ABC Australia.
Despite concerns from pediatricians and other red flags, many moms are defending their choice to take babies to the chiropractors on TikTok.
“My daughter went to the chiropractor before she was 1 and it helped her a lot with sitting and her posture,” noted one mother.
“My daughter didn’t sleep more than 2 hours at a time and had chronic stomach problems. One trip to the chiro (practitioner) and she slept 12 hours straight,” said another parent on a viral TikTok of a man holding a baby by the legs upside down, which garnered more than 2 million views in 2021.
Tabaie would never recommend going to the chiropractor with a child, he told BuzzFeed News.
“Babies and children are not little adults. They’re a completely different entity in terms of their anatomy, how they experience pain and how their muscles and bones interact,” Tabaie told BuzzFeed News. child helps. , but you have to be aware of the consequences.”
