An Arkansas man last month amputated his right leg with a saw in front of his 5-year-old daughter, according to court records filed last week.
Shannon Cox, 48, is charged with endangering the welfare of a minor, according to an affidavit with probable cause.
On Aug. 2, a Boone County Sheriff’s Office corporal found a naked Cox, who “missed part of his right leg,” on the ground in front of a residence, the affidavit said.
When the officer asked Cox what the cause of the injury was, he said a “chop saw,” according to the affidavit.
Cox was flown to a hospital, the affidavit said.
His daughter, who was not identified, told officials that “she was present when her father cut off his own leg,” the document said.
The child “appeared to still be in a state of shock” during the interview with law enforcement that took place at a child’s advocacy center, the affidavit said.
It was unclear Friday afternoon whether Cox had engaged a lawyer. His relatives could not be reached for comment.
The affidavit also said Cox’s wife, Sandy, spoke with an investigator at the sheriff’s office. She said her husband had “behaved strangely” before the incident.
“Sandy said he told her he was Jesus Christ and she needed to make amends with the Lord,” the affidavit said. “Sandy said he then became violent towards her and said he was Satan. He told Sandy he would turn her head off and continued to make verbal threats.
Sandy Cox, 30, told an investigator that she had left the house the night before, but had not taken her daughter with her. She feared her husband would kill her, but said she was “not worried about her daughter,” the affidavit said.
She was unavailable on Friday.
Sandy Cox was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child, court records show.
Little Rock’s NBC affiliate KARK reported that the judge in the case had issued a contactless warrant to Shannon Cox for the child and his wife.
